10/15/2012 - DAYTON, Ohio -- Cadet Kellie Dowling, a 21 year old senior at James Madison University from the Detachment 890 Air Force ROTC program at the University of Virginia, recently competed in the Air Force marathon.
The annual race, held at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, consisted of a full marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K and wheelchair events and was attended by a record 15,000 men and women.
Having only run one marathon previously, Dowling expressed that she has never desired to become an elite runner and has already reached a lot of her goals.
"I run to stay in shape and stay healthy," says the Pennsylvania native. "It really isn't that important to me, I just ran it with a goal in mind."
With a time of 3:16:58, Dowling came in first out of 112 women in her 20-24 age group and fourth place out of 1,065 women overall, blowing away her previous time of three hours and 26 minutes.
A native of Carlisle, Penn., Dowling has been running since sixth grade and comes from an active family who encouraged her throughout her training. Last year, a handful of Det. 890 cadets, including Dowling, decided to participate in the Air Force marathon and she began training in the beginning of June.
Dowling said it was difficult training in the summer months and said although running is fun, the training is hard on a person's body.
Dowling's time qualified her for the Boston Marathon, but she made it clear she was not going to participate in it just yet. The cadet is taking a break from marathons for a while to focus on her senior year and her future career as an Air Force Logistics Readiness officer. |
