11/15/2012 - BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Understanding the Air Force ROTC's vocabulary can prove to be difficult.

Luckily, Samford's Air Force ROTC Detachment 012's latest achievement is simple to comprehend, as they received the Most Outstanding Unit award in the state of Alabama from the Air Force Association.

The award names Detachment 012 the best in the state, outranking larger detachments at schools like University of Alabama and Auburn University. It recognizes the detachment's excellence in training, commitment to service and relationship with Samford.

During the past year, the detachment has undergone a complete reorganization of its training structure. With a stronger focus on leadership, the new structure focuses on training the older cadets to lead the younger cadets through field training.

The new training structure has paid off, because the detachment earned a 100 percent pass rate at this summer's physical fitness assessment, a difficult task for an entire detachment to achieve.

The award also recognizes the detachment's efforts in community service with organizations like Wounded Warriors and Habitat for Humanity, and it commends Samford for the support it gives to the detachment and its cadets.

The award comes at a time of transition for the detachment. Once nicknamed "The Dirty Dozen," the cadets have chosen to change it to "The Iron Warriors." The new nickname will be something each cadet will wear with pride once commissioned into the Air Force.

The Iron Warriors are made up of 56 cadets from six area schools: Samford, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Miles College, Jefferson State Community College, University of Montevallo and Birmingham Southern.

The detachment is set to receive the Most Outstanding Unit Award at a ceremony at Maxwell Air Force Base this December. Along with the award, the detachment will be given money for its booster club, which funds all detachment events.
