JROTC cadets pay homage to Medal of Honor recipients

The Mainland High School Air Force JROTC color guard post the colors during a ceremony in Daytona Beach, Fla., July 3 to honor to honor four surviving Medal of Honor recipients under the command of Maj. Michael Miglioranzi, senior aerospace and science instructor and Master Sgt. Russell Garthwaite, assistant science instructor. The color guard cadets are: Sabre Nasser, Austin Hanstine, Taylor Jordan, Tyler Burkett. Cadets Brittany Bower, Delante Wilcox, Devante Wilcox and Brendon McGee also assisted in the event. Joining the 'long blue line'

An Air Force ROTC cadet touches Maxwell's monument to the "Prop and Wings" in a ceremony June 19 that signified the cadets acceptance into the "long blue line of the Air Force." The cadets wear the prop and wings emblem after completing the arduous first phase of officer training. Air Education and Training Command Commander Gen. Stephen Lorenz established the ceremony at Maxwell in 2007 while he commanded Air University. He attended the Maxwell ceremony June 19. The prop and wings emblem was first worn by aviation cadets in 1917. Today the emblem is worn by cadets at the Air Force Academy and Officer Training School in addition to cadets in Air Force ROTC. Air Force JROTC cadets from Lake Worth Community High School, Lake Worth, Fla., performed a Saber Cordon April 9 for Army Gen. David Petraeus, commander US CENTCOM at a Forum Club luncheon at Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, Fla. Two cadets from the detachment were chosen to ask the general a question and each cadet was given a coin for excellence after the luncheon. General Petraeus spoke to the crowd of 760 regarding the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan in addition to other issues. General Petraeus assumed command of the United States Central Command in October 2008, after serving for over 19 months as the Commanding General, Multi-National Force-Iraq. While visiting the 121st Air Refueling Wing at Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base, Ohio, cadets from Ohio State University's Air Force ROTC detachment 645 had the opportunity to listen to Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Rodney McKinley speak about his vision for the Air Force and a second lieutenant's role as a leader in the Air Force.
